Do you take insurance?
I do not accept insurance. Insurance companies require me to diagnose clients, and then often allow only a certain number of sessions based on the diagnosis. Because of our healthcare industry and rules regarding pre-existing conditions, I dislike having to formally diagnose a client, which will then stay on medical records. Insurance companies are also notoriously a hassle for clients and providers to manage.
I can offer out of network superbills that you then submit to your insurance company. Many insurance plans will reimburse clients either partially or fully for therapy sessions, you just need to call your provider to check your benefits.
How long will I be in therapy?
I wish there were a succinct answer to this question, but I would be a crappy therapist if I made a promise regarding length of therapy. You are a human being - a soul, not a machine that needs to be fixed and sent back out into the world. Some clients begin therapy hoping it will take a few months and find there is more they want to explore and understand about themselves and their lives.
If you are hoping to be in and out of therapy in 5-8 sessions, I am probably not the therapist for you. My work tends to be greatly relational, full of depth and meaning making. It is my experience that those things do not tend to adhere to linear timeframes. I keep open communication with clients, and ultimately the client is always in control of when they want to dive in more, slow down, or stop.
I trust the wisdom of the client and the therapeutic relationship, so that we can find whatever is best for you.
This is my first time seeing a therapist. What is the process like?
I offer a free phone consultation before you schedule with me. Like any relationship, the alchemy between a therapist and a client takes time, but seeing a therapist can feel intimidating, and the initial phone call gives you the space to share what is going on for you, what you are looking for, and to see if I feel like the right therapist for you.
Once you decide to book a session, I will send you intake paperwork online that you will need to complete before our session and then we meet. Our first session will be a decent amount of informational gathering, and you sharing a broader picture of what is going on in your life that brought you to therapy. It might feel a little awkward to be sharing such personal information and intimate parts of your life with someone you just met. You may feel a lot of emotion, or you may not.
Here’s the thing: it is all ok. My job is to help hold space for you and everything you bring to the therapy space. In therapy, you do not need to be anyone but yourself, as you are.
What are fees?
My full fee is $165 for a 50 minute session, but I am always willing to discuss fees with clients who feel they cannot afford the full fee.
Since I do not take insurance, I do reserve a number of reduced fee spaces in my practice. I trust clients to be honest about their financial situation and find that usually, those who can pay the full fee, do, which allows me to extend the fee reduction to others in need.
Please do not let fee deter you from inquiring about therapy with me. I like to keep communication regarding fees open. Financial hardships should never create shame when it comes to therapy.
How often should I come?
I like new clients to come to therapy once a week for at least 3-5 sessions. There is so much relationship building that happens early in the therapeutic process, and the consistency early on gives us a chance to build a strong foundation.
From there, some clients chose to come once a week, and others prefer every other week. I let the client take the lead in deciding what feels right for them. Oftentimes after some consistent work, a client will ask to come once a month, and that is a helpful way to stay in relationship while also spreading your new wings in the world.
